WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE BULGARIAN WINE TASTING IN SOFIA?
The Wines
Bulgaria has been producing wine for over 3,000 years — longer than France, longer than Italy. Yet most of the world has never heard of it, which means the prices are a fraction of comparable Western European wines without any compromise on quality.
Your tasting includes 5 handpicked Bulgarian wines, each from a different region or grape variety. A local wine expert leads the session, explaining the story behind each wine — the vineyard, the terroir, the grape and what makes Bulgarian winemaking unique. The selection changes seasonally so you always get what’s freshest and most interesting.
Expect everything from crisp whites and rosés to full-bodied reds made from indigenous varieties like Mavrud and Rubin that you simply can’t find anywhere else in the world.
The Setting & Appetizers
The tasting takes place in a private area of a centrally located wine bar — no tourist traps, no generic venues. We work with spaces that take wine seriously and create the right atmosphere for a proper tasting experience.
Traditional Bulgarian appetizers are served throughout — local cheese, cold cuts and fresh bread. This isn’t just decoration. In Bulgaria, wine and food are inseparable, and eating while you taste is exactly how locals do it. The combination brings out flavours in the wine that you’d miss drinking it on its own.
Your Guide & Getting There
Your English-speaking Tweekends guide meets you at your accommodation and walks you to the venue — it’s centrally located so no transfer is needed. They’ll introduce you to the wine expert, keep things relaxed and give you local tips and recommendations for the rest of the evening.
The tasting moves at a leisurely pace — this is a proper wine experience, not a race. Expect interesting conversation, genuine stories about Bulgarian wine culture and a few surprises along the way.
Why the Bulgarian Wine Tasting Works Perfectly for Groups
The wine tasting is one of our most versatile activities — it works for groups who want something genuinely interesting, for those who want a relaxed afternoon before a big night out, and for mixed groups where not everyone is into high-adrenaline activities.
It pairs exceptionally well with the Bulgarian Traditional Dinner at 20:00 — the tasting at 17:00–18:00 flows naturally into dinner, giving the group a full evening of authentic Bulgarian food and drink culture. Alternatively, combine it with a Rakia Tasting for a complete Bulgarian drinks experience in one afternoon.
