WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE RAFTING IN SOFIA?
The Struma River & the Rapids
The Struma River runs through one of Bulgaria’s most dramatic gorges — steep canyon walls, crystal-clear water and genuine white water rapids that get the adrenaline going from the first bend. It sits approximately 100km from Sofia, making it the closest proper white water rafting destination to the city and one of the most popular adventure activities in the country.
The section we use is suitable for groups with no prior experience — your professional instructor handles the briefing, the technique and the safety, so all your group needs to do is show up and paddle. That said, the rapids are real and the experience is genuinely exhilarating. According to Paddle Bulgaria, the Struma gorge is one of the premier rafting destinations in the Balkans — and once you’re on the water, it’s easy to see why.
Equipment & Safety
Full equipment is included for every participant — wetsuit, helmet, life jacket and paddle. Your professional instructor runs a full safety briefing before you get on the water, covering paddle technique, river commands and what to do if anyone goes overboard. The instructor stays with the group on the water throughout the entire session.
No prior rafting experience is required. The Struma section we use is graded appropriately for first-timers while still delivering the kind of rapids that make grown men scream. In a good way.
Your Guide & Private Transfer
Your English-speaking guide meets the group at your accommodation in Sofia and travels with you to the river and back. The drive takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes each way through some of Bulgaria’s most scenic countryside — it’s part of the experience, not just dead time.
Private door-to-door transfer in a licensed minibus is included both ways. No public transport, no car hire, no navigating unfamiliar roads. The group travels together, the guide handles logistics and you arrive at the river ready to go.
Why Rafting Works Perfectly for a Stag Do in Sofia
Rafting is one of those activities that works for every type of group. It’s physical without being intimidating, competitive without being cutthroat and produces the kind of shared experience that bonds a group instantly. The combination of adrenaline, fresh air and genuine natural beauty makes it one of the most talked-about activities on any stag weekend.
It works best as a full Saturday experience — transfer out in the morning, rafting by midday, back to Sofia in the afternoon with enough time to recover, shower and get ready for dinner and the night out. Pair it with a Bulgarian Traditional Dinner at 20:00 and a VIP Club Night to finish — and you have the perfect stag do Saturday.
Rafting Sofia: Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do we need any rafting experience? No — none at all. Your professional instructor covers everything you need to know in the briefing before you get on the water. The Struma River section we use is suitable for complete beginners while still delivering genuine white water excitement.
-
What should we wear for rafting? Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet — you will get wet. A swimsuit or shorts under the wetsuit works well. The wetsuit, helmet and life jacket are all provided. Bring a change of clothes for the drive back.
-
Is the rafting suitable for a bachelor party or stag do? Absolutely — it’s one of the most popular full-day activities for stag groups in Sofia. It combines adrenaline, fresh air and genuine adventure, and it creates exactly the kind of shared experience that stag weekends are built around.
-
How far is the Struma River from Sofia? Approximately 100km from central Sofia — around 1 hour and 30 minutes by road. Private transfer is included both ways so the journey is part of the experience, not a hassle.
-
What is the minimum group size for rafting? Minimum 8 people. Contact us for larger group pricing and availability.
-
Is the rafting available all year? The rafting season runs from spring through autumn, with conditions varying by season. Spring offers the highest water levels and most powerful rapids. Summer is ideal for warmer temperatures. Contact us to confirm availability for your specific dates.
-
What happens if the weather is bad? Safety is always our priority. If conditions on the day are unsuitable for rafting, we will contact you in advance and arrange an alternative activity or reschedule. This is rare — the Struma gorge is a well-established venue with experienced operators.
-
Can we combine rafting with other activities? Yes — rafting works best as a morning or early afternoon activity. It pairs perfectly with a Bulgarian Traditional Dinner in the evening and flows naturally into a night out afterwards. For a full action day, some groups combine it with shooting or karting the following morning.
